Inspiration & ideas

Many IKEA hackers tell me their goal is to make an IKEA product serve a specific function. No matter the reason, hacking IKEA is not easy all the time, but fun most of the time. From what started as a hobby,IKEA Hackershas grown to be a library of thousands of IKEA hacks. These projects are shared by professionals and amateurs alike, all joined by a common love for modifying Swedish flatpack and putting their personal stamp on mass produced products.

So while the kids are watching their favorite movie, and your husband enjoying a late-night snack, you can collect a book from behind the sofa and still be part of all the family action. As well as a cozy nook, you'll want a place to display your prized possessions. This alcove idea makes the most of an awkward space while making sure that your books are given the space they truly deserve.

Library Wall

Interior designer Emily Henderson of Emily Henderson Design created a simple, streamlined home library with a view on the far end of this sunny living room that's also a perfect spot for studying. A round white tulip table and a pair of natural wood Scandi-style chairs are nestled in the floor-to-ceiling bay windows that provide natural light and a pretty view of the outdoors. The space is defined by a pair of sconces on opposite walls, and a small bookshelf houses reading material. In this sleek and polished home library from the interior design team at Forbes + Masters, a tufted blue reading nook is built between a pair of tall glass-front shelves in dark brown-stained wood, accented with brass handles. Deep chocolate paint on the walls makes the shelving look custom built.

Crown molding is usually what you need to turn a bookcase into a built-in when the ceiling is low. Even short BILLY boockases could store lots of books and provide enough surface to display pictures. Birch veneer could look great in your interior if you have some more light wood furniture around.

Create a bookshelf that you can see at eye level

Barn rustic floorboards, creating a contemporary home with an industrial chic home library idea. Situating yourself in this location will allow you to hear the birds sing and the rain pour – the perfect soundtrack to accompany your reading list. Small yet effective, the mirror idea on the wall reflects off the adjacent garden to cleverly create an outside-in illusion. I love the dramatic modern Ikea cabinetry in this office from Love Create Celebrate.

It’s also easy to make some tweaks to the Ikea pieces to make them fit your space perfectly. We used a high quality trim paint from Sherwin Williams, and painted the bookcases the same color as the trim and doors in the rest of the house, which is "Worldly Grey" by Sherwin Williams. Shorter bookcases give you space on top to show off more style.

Use this on the wall opposite the bed in the cottage MB renovation? Might be more cost effective to modify IKEA Billy bookcases to create the library wall. Blogger Emma Chapman of A Beautiful Mess installed a custom built bookshelf wall complete with a library ladder on one side of her living room that houses a nonchalantly stacked collection books and knickknacks.

I love this creative small-space office nook under the stairs by Medina of Grillo Designs. Check out these inspirational examples of home libraries in a variety of styles that range from modest to swoon-worthy to help you carve out space in your home dedicated to the timeless pleasure of reading. A rolling ladder is what you need if your bookcases are tall.

Plus, I love that they make so many inexpensive storage pieces- from bookcases, to file cabinets, to pegboards. After laying them out how we wanted them, my dad cut theses triangular guides to keep the corner piece in the exact right place while we set up and secured the bookcases to the wall. We have 8 foot ceilings, so the Billy Bookcases with the Billy Extenders on top were the perfect height. In the picture above, you can see the bookshelves normally, and the extenders we put on top in front of them on the floor. Although the floor to ceiling design provide considerable more storage.

While it might seem antithetical to install a TV in the middle of your home library, this one largely disappears against the black paint of the shelving. Interior designer Kim Nadel of Kim Nadel Interiors created a home library book corner with contemporary built-in black, white, and wood shelving that is backlit for dramatic effect. An oversized pouf provides a place to page through coffee table books.

Colorful

IKEA Billy could be a transparent bookcase that showcases the beautiful color of a wall behind it. He worked from his hometown, Älmhult, Sweden, selling household goods like pens, wallets and picture frames. Today, IKEA is a global home furnishing brand operating in over 50 countries. Yet Ingvar’s Småland roots still live on in IKEA — his innovative, no-nonsense approach to problem solving and the desire to make good design accessible to the many. In simple words, it means the alteration or customisation of IKEA products. It could range from a repurposing, reassembly, upgrade, update, personalisation or the creation of something totally new.

Interior designer Lauren Lerner of Living with Lolo carved a cookbook library in this spacious kitchen that provides a dedicated place to display and browse favorite cookbooks, or sit down with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and plan meals. The nook is decorated with wallpaper and outfitted with floating shelves that highlight its purpose and make it more fun to use. Interior designer Laquita Tate of Laquita Tate Interior Styling & Designs created an affordable take on a home library with a pair of leaning bookshelves.
